RECALLS & COMPLAINTS

  • Report Receipt Date
    04-17-2000
  • NHTSA Campaign:
    00V114000
  • Summary:
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. SOME OF THESE VEHICLES HAVE INTERNAL FLUID LEAKS IN THE BRAKE HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT.
  • Consequence:
WHEN THE REAR BRAKE PROPORTIONING, ANTILOCK BRAKE, TRACTION CONTROL, OR STABILITY CONTROL FEATURE IS ACTIVATED IN SOME DRIVING SITUATIONS, THE FEATURE MAY NOT PERFORM AS DESIGNED.
  • Remedy:
DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE ABS HYDRAULIC MODULATOR UNIT AND IF NECESSARY, REPLACE THE HYDRAULIC MODULATOR.
  • Report Receipt Date
    10-30-2000
  • NHTSA Campaign:
    00V347000
  • Summary:
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES, HEARSE, AND LIMOUSINES. SOME OF THESE VEHICLES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FMVSS NO. 209, "SEAT BELT ASSEMBLIES." THESE VEHICLES HAVE SEAT BELTS THAT MAY NOT MEET THE 30-POUND PUSH BUTTON RELEASE EFFORT REQUIREMENT OF THE STANDARD.
  • Consequence:
HIGH RELEASE EFFORTS COULD MAKE IT MORE DIFFICULT FOR A CRASH VICTIM TO RELEASE THE BELT AND EXIT THE VEHICLE.
  • Remedy:
DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE SEAT BELTS AND, IF NECESSARY, MODIFY THE LATCH PLATES OR REPLACE THE RETRACTOR. DEALERS WILL ALSO ADD "SNAP ON" LATCH CLIPS TO ELIMINATE THE POTENTIAL OF INVERTED LATCH PLATE INSERTION. OWNER NOTIFICATION IS BEING CONDUCTED IN PHASES. THE FIRST PHASE BEGAN MAY 29, 2001, AND THE SECOND PHASE BEGAN JULY 6, 2001. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT CADILLAC AT 1-800-458-8006.
  • Report Receipt Date
    01-26-2000
  • NHTSA Campaign:
    00V021000
  • Summary:
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: LIMOUSINES. DURING NORMAL ENGINE ROLL, THE PLASTIC END FITTING OF THE CRUISE CONTROL CABLE COULD CONTACT THE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER AND FRACTURE. THIS DOES NOT MEET THE REQUIREMENTS OF FMVSS NO. 124, "ACCELERATOR CONTROL SYSTEMS."
  • Consequence:
THE FRACTURE COULD PREVENT FULL CLOSING OF THE THROTTLE AND CAUSE A SMALL INCREASE IN ENGINE RPM IN DRIVE WITH THE BRAKE APPLIED.
  • Remedy:
DEALERS WILL INSTALL A NEW CRUISE CONTROL BRACKET AND, IF NECESSARY, WILL REPLACE THE CRUISE CONTROL CABLE.
  • Report Receipt Date
    09-05-2002
  • NHTSA Campaign:
    02V227000
  • Summary:
CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES CONTAIN DRIVER AND FRONT PASSENGER LAP AND/OR SHOULDER BELT RETRACTORS THAT MAY NOT REMAIN LOCKED UP AS DESIGNED DURING A CRASH IN WHICH THE BELT PRETENSIONERS DEPLOY.
  • Consequence:
IN SUCH A CRASH, THIS COULD RESULT IN AN INCREASE IN INJURY FOR THAT OCCUPANT.
  • Remedy:
DEALERS WILL INSTALL A RETAINER KIT IN THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SAFETY BELT PRETENSIONER. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN JANUARY 31, 2003.
    06-23-2014
  • NHTSA Campaign:
    14V355000
  • Summary:
This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2009 Buick LaCrosse, 2006-2011 Buick Lucerne, 2000-2005 Cadillac DeVille, 2006-2011 Cadillac DTS, 2006-2014 Chevrolet Impala, and 2006-2007 Chevrolet Monte Carlo vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the weight on the key ring and road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.
  • Consequence:
If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury. Additionally, a key knocked out of the run position will cause loss of engine power, power steering, and power braking, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
  • Remedy:
GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 23, 2014. Owners may contact General Motors customer service at 1-800-521-7300 (Buick), 1-800-458-8006 (Cadillac), and 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet). GM's number for this recall is 14299.

WHEN COLD, UPON STARTING ENGINE AND SHIFTING INTO EITHER REVERSE OR DRIVE, THE CAR ABRUPTLY JOLTS AND VIBRATES. PROBLEM ORIGINALLY WOULD OCCUR WHEN CAR WAS COLD AND GAS TANK WAS LESS THAN HALF FULL. AS THE WEEKS/MILES PASSED, THE JOLT PROBLEM BEGAN TO OCCUR MORE FREQUENTLY, REGARDLESS OF THE AMOUNT OF GAS IN THE TANK. INITIALLY, JOLT PROBLEM ONLY OCCURRED WHEN CAR WAS COLD. HOWEVER, JOLT PROBLEM NOW OCCURS ON ALL STARTUPS, REGARDLESS OF A COLD OR WARM START. CAR WAS TAKEN TO DEALERSHIP EARLY ON, WHEN PROBLEM WAS MORE PREVALENT WITH COLD STARTS ONLY. DEALERSHIP CONTACTED CADILLAC AND REPORTED THE PROBLEM. CAR OWNER WAS ADVISED THAT A "TECHNICAL FIX WAS IN THE WORKS" FOR THE PCM MODULE (THE APPARENT CULPRIT WAS RELATED TO EMISSIONS), PROMISED AVAILABLE IN 60-90 DAYS. AFTER 90 DAYS, CAR WAS AGAIN TAKEN TO DEALERSHIP FOR THE SAME JOLT PROBLEM, ONLY NOW IT OCCURS ALL THE TIME. DEALERSHIP CONTENDS THERE IS NO FIX, BECAUSE THE JOLT IS NOT A PROBLEM, BUT A FEATURE - THAT ONE MUST WAIT 45-60 SECONDS AFTER STARTING ENGINE TO PUT THE CAR IN GEAR, SO THAT THE CAR HAS A CHANCE TO WARM UP. THIS IS NOT THE SOLUTION, AS THE PROBLEM OCCURS WHEN THE CAR IS WARM AS WELL. MAJOR CONCERN IS THAT THE JOLT PROBLEM HAS GRADUALLY WORSENED OVER TIME/MILES, AND OWNER IS UNSURE OF THE DETRIMENTAL EFFECT THE JOLT HAS ON THE ENGINE OR TRANSMISSION. FOUND A COMPARABLE CUSTOMER COMPLAINT AT NHTSA WEBSITE REGARDING SUDDEN ACCELERATION (JOLT) AND THE NEED TO WARM UP FOR AT LEAST 30 SECONDS, WHICH APPEARS TO CORROBORATE THAT A KNOWN PROBLEM EXISTS.*AK

AN ARTICLE IN TODAY'S WALL STREET JOURNAL INDICATED THAT THE NHTSA IS CONDUCTING AN INVESTIGATION INTO POSSIBLE GENERAL MOTORS CAR DEFECTS. NOTABLY DIFFICULTY IN THE POWER STEERING MAKING A LEFT HAND TURN. MY 2000 CADILLAC DEVILLE , WITH 60,000 MILES IS EXPERIENCEING JUST SUCH AN ISSUE. I TOOK THE CAR INTO COLUMBUS CADILLAC AND THEY SAID I NEEDED A NEW STEERING RACK - THE INSTALLATION OF WHICH WOULD COST $ 1,300.00. THE CAR STEERS FINE IN MAKING A RIGHT HAND TURN BUT IS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT IN MAKING A LEFT HAND TURN. I ENCOURAGE YOUR REVIEW OF THIS MATTER FOR A POSSIBLE RECALL, FOR THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR THIS SAFETY ISSUE TO ARISE AT SUCH MILEAGE- THE VAST MAJORITY OF WHICH HAS BEEN HIGHWAY MILEAGE..
