Coverage, Supported Vehicles, and Data Availability
Summary: PremiumVIN supports VIN lengths from 5 to 17 digits, covering modern vehicles alongside classic, motorcycle, ATV, RV, truck, and trailer formats, with license plate lookup and vehicle history checks available across all U.S. states and a growing list of countries. Coverage depth varies meaningfully by vehicle type, make, model year, state, and country — this page explains where and why. |
Not every vehicle, and not every record type for a given vehicle, has the same depth of available data. Before using any PremiumVIN tool, it helps to understand the general shape of what is and isn’t covered — and why coverage is uneven rather than uniform.
Supported VIN Formats and Vehicle Types
PremiumVIN supports VIN and chassis-number formats ranging from 5 to 17 digits, which covers both the standardized 17-character VIN used on virtually all vehicles built since 1981 and the shorter, manufacturer-specific formats used on older and specialty vehicles.
- Modern cars and light trucks (standardized 17-digit VIN)
- Classic and pre-1981 vehicles (5–17-digit formats, varying by manufacturer and era)
- Motorcycles
- ATVs
- RVs and campers
- Trucks (including commercial and specialty truck makes)
- Trailers

VIN Decoder
License Plate Lookup and Vehicle History / VIN Check tools are available for all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Underlying record depth varies by state depending on how each state’s title, registration, and reporting systems are digitized and shared with third-party data providers.
International
PremiumVIN also offers VIN Check coverage for a growing list of countries. International coverage should be treated as more limited and more variable than U.S. coverage by default — data-source availability, digitization, and reporting consistency differ substantially by country.
Why Coverage Varies
- Older records were often never digitized, or were digitized inconsistently across states and countries.
- Some data providers only began reporting certain record types (e.g. salvage titles, lien records) after a specific date.
- Manufacturer build-data availability for window stickers varies by make and model year.
- Specialty vehicle types (motorcycles, trailers, ATVs) generally have thinner historical record coverage than passenger cars.
A thin or blank result for a specific vehicle does not necessarily mean something is wrong with the vehicle, or with the search — it may simply mean the relevant source never captured or shared that record. See Why Vehicle Data May Be Missing or Incorrect for the full explanation.
What to Do When Coverage Is Limited
If a specific record type consistently returns no result for a vehicle that should plausibly have that history, support can review the request and confirm whether the gap reflects source-data unavailability or something worth investigating further. See Report and Check Corrections, Support, and Refund Process.
