Window Sticker Missing Fields

Summary: A reconstructed window sticker omits a field when the VIN, the configuration data or the model-level data does not supply it. This page lists each symptom with its likely causes, a check, and a next step. A missing field is not always a data gap. Start by ruling out an input problem.

Triage: three questions

  1. Does the VIN entered match the vehicle? Compare the dashboard plate, the door-frame label and the title. See where to find the VIN.
  2. Does the VIN follow the modern format? A modern VIN has 17 characters and no letters I, O or Q. Older vehicles use other formats; see classic car VINs.
  3. Do the decoded year, make and model match the vehicle? Run the VIN decoder and compare.

A no to any question points to an input problem. Correct the VIN first.

Symptoms, causes and checks

Symptom Likely cause Check Next step
No document is generated The VIN failed validation, the vehicle is non-standard or pre-1981, or no configuration data exists for the year and model Re-read the VIN and run it again Correct the VIN and retry. If the VIN is valid and the year is supported, request regeneration.
Few or no options and packages Configuration data is incomplete for that trim, or the items were installed by a dealer or port after the factory Compare the equipment on the vehicle with the standard equipment block Treat a missing option as unknown, not absent. Ask the seller for the original label or the order paperwork.
Trim, engine or body differs from the vehicle The decode could not settle the trim, two trims share the decoded attributes, or the vehicle has been modified since it was built Compare the decoded engine and body with the vehicle Rely on the decoded fields and the vehicle itself. Treat the trim as uncertain.
MSRP is lower or higher than expected Missing options lower a standard total, or a priced alternative listed together raise it. Check that MSRP + priced options + shipping equals the total, and that each category appears once See MSRP and total price. Do not read the total as a value.
Colors are missing or generic Paint color is not encoded in most VINs. Color data is sourced where available. Read the color on the vehicle's certification label, which on many vehicles carries a paint code Use the vehicle's own label
Safety ratings read Not Rated, or fuel economy is absent NHTSA assigned no rating for that year or the vehicle predates it. The Overall Vehicle Score began with the 2011 model-year ratings. Look up the vehicle on NHTSA's site and the fueleconomy.gov No action needed. The report reflects the available data.
Dealer, delivery city or transport method is absent These entries belong to one delivery. They are not in the VIN or in model-level data. None Ask the seller or the dealer for the original label
Warranty shows terms that have expired The block states the terms as first offered Compare the original sale date with each term Confirm current coverage with the manufacturer

When the cause is the data

Three causes sit outside the input:

  • No configuration data exists for that year, make and trim. The decode can still work.
  • Sources conflict. Two data sources disagree on a package or a price, and the document should show the field as uncertain instead of choosing one.
  • The vehicle is outside supported coverage. See the coverage page for supported makes, model years and blocks.

Requesting a correction or regeneration

Prepare the VIN, a photo of the dashboard plate and the door-frame label, and a description of the discrepancy, naming the field and what the vehicle shows. See how to request a correction or regeneration.

Finding the original

Ask the seller whether the original label is still with the vehicle. Manufacturers or the selling dealer may be able to supply a copy for some vehicles. Availability varies by manufacturer and model year. See original vs reconstructed.
