What Information Will You Get in the Vehicle History Report?

Once you’ve successfully run a VIN check in Puerto Rico and get the vehicle history report, you will get complete vehicle information in the report. Here’s the information you will find on the report:

Vehicle Specifications

Learn about the vehicle’s specifications, including its make, model, engine type, displacement, body style, manufacturing origin, and fuel system. Compare these details with the seller’s description to check whether the information matches the car you’re considering.

Review ownership records, such as the number of previous owners and recorded ownership periods. Private information, including owners’ names and addresses, is not displayed in the report.

Check title records for designations such as salvage or rebuilt status and any reported flood damage or other title brands. These records may help you identify issues that could affect the vehicle’s condition, history, or registration eligibility in Puerto Rico.

Check the lien records to see whether a lender or another party may have a recorded financial interest in the vehicle. Before completing the purchase, verify any outstanding obligations and confirm the vehicle’s title and lien status through the appropriate authorities or relevant documentation.

Check records to see whether the vehicle has been reported stolen or subsequently recovered. The report includes relevant dates, locations, and information about the reporting source.

Review available manufacturer recall information associated with the VIN, including affected components and recall details. Contact the vehicle manufacturer or an authorized service center to confirm whether any applicable recalls remain outstanding.

Review available service records, such as oil changes, brake servicing, inspections, and repairs. These entries can help you understand the vehicle’s maintenance history, although not every workshop visit or service appointment will appear in the report.

Check for reported incidents involving collisions, flooding, fire, hail, or other damage. When records are available, the report may include incident dates, locations, and damage details. Unreported incidents may not appear, so consider arranging an independent inspection before buying.

Compare recorded odometer readings over time to identify inconsistencies or unusual changes. Missing entries or a decrease in reported mileage may warrant further investigation, as they do not necessarily prove odometer tampering.

Review auction and sales records, including previous listings, sale details, condition notes, and auction images where available. The report includes up to 10 auction photos that show its condition during the auction.

What Information is NOT Included in the PR VIN Check?

Running a VIN check helps you review the vehicle’s recorded history, but it cannot show everything about the vehicle. However, some information may not be available because it was never reported or added to the existing database.

Mechanical Condition and Wear and Tear

A VIN check cannot tell whether the engine is healthy, the transmission is slipping, the brakes are already worn, or the suspension needs to be repaired. The service also cannot show how the vehicle was driven or how much wear its interior has sustained.

Unreported Accidents and Damage

A VIN check cannot show if the vehicle has suffered from any accident or damage that was not reported. Minor collisions, privately repaired damage, frame damage, and flood damage may be missing if they were never reported to an insurer or recorded in an available database.

Routine Maintenance Records

The tool does not guarantee giving you a complete maintenance history. Oil changes, fluid replacements, filter changes, and other routine services may be missing, especially if they were performed by independent mechanics or were never recorded.

Real-Time Mileage Tracking

It may display odometer readings recorded at specific points in the vehicle’s history, but gaps in those records can make it difficult to identify mileage discrepancies or possible odometer rollbacks.

Puerto Rico Vehicle Title and History Terms

When you are checking a used car in PR, you will come across Spanish terms in vehicle documents or records. Understanding these terms can help you identify potential title issues, previous damage, or outstanding financial interests that need more attention.

English term Spanish term What it may indicate
Salvage Salvamento A vehicle has been designated as salvage or declared a total loss under applicable rules.
Rebuilt Reconstruido A previously damaged or branded vehicle has been repaired or assigned a subsequent title status.
Flood Inundado Flood damage has been reported or identified in an available record.
Lien Gravamen A creditor may have a financial claim against the vehicle.

If you find a salvage title, possible flood damage, or a lien, verify the information through the records and ask the seller for more documentation. You might also consider an independent inspection to confirm if there are additional damages to be taken into account.

Puerto Rico Vehicle Paperwork and Agencies

When you are in the process of buying a used car in Puerto Rico, don’t forget to review the vehicle’s title, check registration documents, and see the government records before purchasing the vehicle.

Title and Marbete

In Puerto Rico, título refers to the vehicle’s title, while marbete is associated with registration and the vehicle’s annual renewal requirements. Puerto Rico introduced the digital marbete system in September 2023—eligible vehicles can use an electronic sticker rather than the traditional ones.

What Buyers Should Verify

Don’t forget to compare the VIN and vehicle details on the title and registration documents of the car you are considering. Make sure the seller’s information matches the ownership records, and ask about any discrepancies.

DTOP, CESCO Digital, and DACO

In Puerto Rico, several government resources can help buyers verify vehicle information or understand their rights:

  • DTOP: The Department of Transportation and Public Works oversees transportation-related administration, including vehicle registration and title services.
  • CESCO Digital: Eligible users access vehicle and driver information, manage certain registration and marbete transactions, and check or pay applicable fines.
  • DACO: The Department of Consumer Affairs provides consumer guidance and handles complaints involving matters such as used-vehicle purchases. Buyers can review its guidance and complaint procedures if they encounter a dispute with a seller or dealership.

Hurricane Damage and Flooded Cars in Puerto Rico

Hurricanes, flooding, and heavy rainfall are common in Puerto Rico, which may cause damage that is not always visible when a car is put up for sale. If you’re shopping for a used car, make sure to check the records to avoid getting a bad deal.

How Flood Damage Can Affect a Car?

Floodwater can damage a few parts of the vehicle; however, it depends on how high the water reached and how long the vehicle was exposed.

  • Electrical systems: Water can corrode wiring, connectors, sensors, and electronic modules, causing warning lights, intermittent faults, or problems with features such as power windows.
  • Engine and transmission: If water enters the engine or transmission, it can cause serious mechanical damage. Contaminated fluids may also indicate water intrusion.
  • Interior and upholstery: Wet carpeting, seats, and insulation can develop mold and persistent odors if they are not dried properly.
  • Safety equipment: Floodwater could affect airbag components and other electronic safety systems.

Signs of Flood Damage to Look For

Examine the trunk area and check for moisture and inconsistencies between the vehicle’s apparent condition and its age. Electrical problems, flickering lights, or unexplained warning indicators can also warrant further investigation.

Why a Flood-Damaged Car May Still Be Sold?

Some flood-damaged vehicles are repaired and returned to the used-car market. Cosmetic repairs may make a car look presentable without resolving hidden electrical or mechanical problems.

Buying a Car Shipped From the US Mainland

Some used vehicles sold in Puerto Rico could have spent their time in the United States. Checking the vehicle history records before it arrives on the island helps you to check the records so you can be aware of them.

Why Do US Car History Records Matter?

A vehicle may have records from its time in the mainland US that are worth reviewing before you buy it in Puerto Rico. The vehicle history records help you see if the vehicle has ever been marked as salvage, sold at an auction, or involved in an accident.

These records can reveal if the car has concerns that you need to know about, such as a salvage title, odometer rollback, and whether the vehicle follows its maintenance schedule or is still covered by warranty.

What to Verify Before Buying?

First things first, you will need to verify the VIN and make sure it matches the vehicle and the one written on the vehicle’s documentation. Ask the seller for additional paperwork you can take a look at for inspection.

  • Match the VIN: Compare the VIN on the vehicle with the number on its title, registration, and supporting documents.
  • Review transfer documents: Ask the seller for available paperwork showing the vehicle’s previous US title and its transfer and registration in Puerto Rico.
  • Investigate potential issues: If the report shows prior damage, a title brand, or inconsistent mileage, request supporting records and arrange an independent inspection.
  • Confirm sales listing: The listing records may not include every record. Cross-check the report with the one written on the vehicle’s documentation, and you may have a qualified mechanic assess its condition.
